At our 16th August meeting, we talked about new features in the upcoming OS releases, recent Apple News and members shared some other topics.
New OS Features
We talked about some of the new features coming to the OS releases due this autumn:
- Distraction Control in Safari on iOS and Mac. Mac Rumors have a video demonstrating the feature.
- On macOS, changes to Gatekeeper security and a requirement to review app screen recording permissions monthly.
- iOS home screen customisation options including hiding app name labels for a cleaner look.
Apple News
- The Halide app adds Zero Process mode for photos with no computational photography processing.
- DaveK mentioned the simple Zerocam app which is is centred around this feature.
- Rumours of a much smaller redesigned Mac mini.
- A US Judge finds Google and Apple’s search deal violates antitrust law.
- The external USB Super Drive appears to have been discontinued.

- DavidB demonstrated using a two finger drag gesture to select multiple items in apps such as Mail and Notes on iOS.
- DavidB mentioned a news story about large numbers of flies in an area of Leicester.
- DaveK mentioned the “Atomic Shakespeare” episode of Moonlighting.
- Robert mentioned the game “Yeah! You Want “Those Games,” Right? So Here You Go! Now, Let’s See You Clear Them!”, which includes playable versions of fake advert games. Note that this does not appear to be available on Apple platforms.
- Robert had resdicovered how quick and useful it is to perform unit conversions, currency conversions and calculations in Spotlight on Mac and iOS. On iOS it’s particularly convenient as you can just swipe down on the lock or home screen to show the spotlight search box.
