At our 28th July meeting, we talked about new features in iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma. We also discussed recent Apple news and topics raised by members.
iOS 17 & macOS Sonoma
With the public betas of Apple’s new operating systems now available, users have been spotting useful and interesting new features. Robert talked about some of these including:
iOS 17
- Crop option when zooming images.
- Voicemails shown in-line with missed calls.
- Family password sharing.
- Early reminders in Reminders.
- Multiple timers.
macOS Sonoma
- Click on the desktop to hide windows and reveal the desktop.
- Widgets snap to each other.
- Revamped screensharing app with high performance mode.
- Icon to identify files received as email attachments.
- Optical character recognition built into Image Capture when scanning.
- In Notes, you can add links to other notes.
There are threads on the Mac Rumors forums about small features noticed in iOS 17 and macOS Sonoma.
Apple News
We discussed recent Apple news including:
- Tap to Pay on iPhone now available in the UK.
- macOS Sonoma brings Apple passwords to 3rd party browsers.
- Google adds an anti-stalking feature to Android to detect trackers (such as AirTags).
- Developers can now request Vision Pro dev kits.
Eliott mentioned:
- Rare Apple trainers from the mid-90s being auctioned.
- Apple suggesting it could withdraw FaceTime and iMessage over a UK law change.

- DaveK pointed out that it’s possible to disable the caps lock key on the Mac (if you find yourself activating it accidentally). In macOS Ventura the Modifier Keys option used to configure Caps lock can be found in System Settings/Keyboard/Keyboard Shortcuts.
- He also recommended the website Bento.me where you can create a personal webpage with links to your websites and social media. Here is Dave’s page.
- DaveK showed us this Tweeted video from Marc Blank-Settle about what happens when the iPhone stopwatch goes past 9999 hours.
