At our 10th March meeting Robert shared some tips for macOS and iOS. We also discussed recent Apple news and members shared their own interesting tips and topics.
Mac and iOS Tips
Robert shared some tips he’d recently found for macOS and iOS:
macOS
- Using Carbon Copy Cloner to create a bootable backup of an APFS drive. This requires using a special option detailed in the CCC documentation. If the clone fails the CCC developer offers advice to resolve the issue.
- Using the Stationery Pad option on a file in Finder to set it as a template for any app.
- Preview has additional file format save options if you hold the option key.
- After searching in Safari, you can use Search Results SnapBack in the History menu to jump straight back to your search results.
- Set a modifier key for hot corners to prevent them from activating accidentally.
- Notes can be opened in a new window which can then be set to keep on top.
- App, folder and file icons can be added to the Finder toolbar.
- Quickly access system settings by holding option and pressing a function key with an icon, for example volume opens the sound settings.
Most of these tips came from this macOS tips article from Mac Rumors.
iOS
- Use the camera flash to notify alerts on iPhone.
- Have your iOS device notify you of sounds (such as alarms, door bells etc.) when you are unable to hear them (for example when wearing headphones).
iPhone Contact Filter Fields
DavidB demonstrated using the filter fields option to limit the information included when sharing a contact on iOS.
David has posted a video showing this feature on YouTube.
News
We discussed some recent Apple news:
- A report warns on the dangers if your iPhone passcode is overseen by someone who then steals the phone. Apple have a support article on setting passcodes which recommends using the more complex option than a 4 digit numeric code.
- Tweetbot and Twitterrific refund subscription customers after they are cut off by Twitter.
Member topics
- DavidB mentioned a report as to how security breaches at password manager LastPass were carried out.
- Ben mentioned that when printing on iOS with no printer installed you have the option of saving the printed output as a PDF.
- DaveK mentioned the newly announced Apple Music Classical app.
- Elliott pointed out that the iOS Guided Access feature can be used to lock a user into a specific app when sharing your iOS device.
